Upcoming webcast: “Global Public Health Preparedness: Is It Possible?” (9/11/07)

Registration is required for the live webcast of “Global Public Health Preparedness: Is It Possible?” on 9/11/07 , 8:30 am-4 pm ET, presented by the Michigan Center for Public Health Preparedness. 

This symposium will discuss global public health preparedness in its broadest context; from preparing for catastrophic health events to addressing global health issues including multi-drug resistant tuberculosis to developing the public health workforce in the international community.

An archived webcast is expected to be available two weeks after the event.

NLTN article in Clinical Laboratory Science, Summer 2007

“Evaluation of Effectiveness of a Continuing Education Program on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing” reports a study of the effectiveness of an NLTN course. Authors are Eunice R. Rosner, Jane R. Willis, Karen K. Mulawski, Alice S. Boone, Harvey B. Lipman, all of the CDC, and Janet F. Hindler, UCLA Medical Center, who conducts AST courses for NLTN. The article appears in the Summer 2007 issue of Clinical Laboratory Science, the Journal of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS).

The article reports:

Results: Data indicate a high level of participant satisfaction, a gain in AST knowledge, an increase in the number of laboratories acquiring the most recently published CLSI guidelines, and improvement in 4 of 28 specific AST practices.

One fellowship is accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the other by the American College of Microbiology.

New items in the NLTN Library – Aug 2007

9747-77.jpg“DNA: Secret of Photo 51“, a DVD from the NOVA series on PBS, is now available for loan from the NLTN Library.  The program tells the story of Rosalind Franklin ’s contribution to the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure by James Watson and Francis Crick.  More information is available at the PBS Website.

We have also received a collection of books on infectious diseases and bioterrorism. New titles include two books on anthrax: The Killer Strain: Anthrax and a Government Exposed by Marilyn W. Thompson (HarperCollins, 2003) and Anthrax: The Investigation of a Deadly Outbreak by Jeanne Guillemin (University of Califonria Press, 1999).

Also available: The Speckled Monster: A Historical Tale of Battling Smallpox by Jennifer Lee Carrell (Dutton, 2003).
